The Route of the Nabateros

A trail full of history and beauty

The Route of the Nabateros, in addition to a pleasant hiking walk, is a journey through the history of the rural environment that invites you to learn about a traditional work declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO: the timber rafting.

Technical data

  • Total distance: 7.5 Km
  • Type of route: linear
  • Positive difference in altitude: +175m
  • Approx. time without stops: 2h15min
  • Difficulty: Medium (over the Tibetan bridge)

The route is linear, that is, with a round trip along the same route, and can start at either of its two ends, although it is advisable to start in Puyarruego. You could return by road creating a loop or circular route. This variable is a little shorter but, being a road it has traffic risks and there is no shade during the hot summer days also you would lose the attractive views. This path connects the village of Puyarruego with that of Escalona, on the banks of the Cinca, in the area known as “La Plancha” and runs through holm oak forests, paths flanked by old dry-stone walls and some sections of road or forest track.

It also crosses small rivers, or ravines such as the Bellos and the Yesa. At this point, the use of safety equipment (harness, anchor lines and helmet) is mandatory to cross the 50-meter Tibetan bridge that joins the two banks. Although if the water level is low, it can be crossed through the riverbed itself.

The entire route is marked with blue milestones and identification plates of the “Route of the Nabateros”. On some of the milestones there are direction arrows and on others a QR code that, scanned with a mobile phone, allows you to read or listen to the audio guides that offer extended information about the route and the timber river raft transport.
